Are You Setting Your Child Up To Succeed?

We all want our children to succeed in school so it is important that they are getting enough sleep. Children who do not get an adequate amount of sleep have difficulty concentrating and learning.

  • Set a bedtime routine for your child and make sure you follow it every night. A bedtime shower/bath, reading books, tucking them into bed, telling stories in the dark are all ideas you can incorporate into your routine to help your child settle down and fall asleep.
  • Turn off all electronic devises at the same time every night. Eliminating stimulation from electronics helps calm their mind and body.
  • Keeping your home calm and quiet before bedtime helps prepare your children for bed.
  • Make sure your child’s bed is prepared for sleeping and not for playing. Eliminate toys from their bed and just keep their 2 favorite things such as a doll or a blanket.

nsufficient sleep can lead to lower academic achievement as well as higher rates of tardiness and absenteeism. Lack of sleep can also affect your child's health leading to hypertension, obesity, headaches, irritability and depression. Children who do get enough sleep have shown to have a healthier immune system, better performance in school, improved behavior, memory and mental health.

The chart below is from The American Academy of Pediatrics and it shows the recommended amount of sleep your child should be getting depending on their age.

Bad eating habits and low activity levels are patterns that are usually developed in childhood and continue into adulthood. These patterns lead to obesity with increasing risks of heart disease, strokes, diabetes and osteoarthritis as adults.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that children get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Limit television and computer time, and spend time outside each day with your children.

Check your child's Body Mass Index with this BMI calculator. Just remember this calculator is not an accurate measure, it is an average. This is a good way to start checking your child's health.
